I got news from our wonderful Sunset Elementary PTA member Mrs. Peggy Stevenson, that we have some former Sunset Elementary students who should be recognized for an amazing feat!
Two awesome teams of kids from Sunset Jr. High and Northridge High School have competed in international robotics competitions twice now.
The competition is called SeaPerch and it’s an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in an in-school or out-of-school setting.
Pretty cool right?
This past June and won both 2nd and 3rd places in their classes. They competed against 81 other international teams!
And then they did even more!
Both of these teams recently qualified to go to the SeaPearch international competition, once again representing Sunset on an international level!
These kids and their coach, Sunset Elementary 5th grade teacher, Trisha Glenn at Sunset Elementary, put so much hard work and dedication into this.
Peggy told me that these kids and their coach have, over the past few years, suffered so much frustration and set-back. We both agree that to achieve this, regardless of all that is truly incredible and speaks volumes to their dedication and perseverance.
They worked on this after school and spent nearly every Saturday at the pool working on it during the entire school year!
Amazing dedication, right?
Well the Sunset City Council would like to be the first to publicly recognize their accomplishments at least year’s 2021 SeaPerch International Competition, and for being once again selected to compete with top teams from all around the world!
So I just wanted to let you all know, these kids are representing not just their team and our elementary school on an international level, but our little city of Sunset as well!
Three of them, Michael Griffith, Lily Griffith, and Lillie Haraala, also happen to be serving on our newest Youth Council.
We plan to formally recognize these talented teams of kids in our council meeting on March 15, which starts at 6:30. We will present them with awards to properly recognize them for this great achievement! Please join us!
